The New York Mets have
been in the league for 50 years this coming season. In all of that time, they
have had a lot of chances to excel in the draft or blow it in the draft.
Some years have brought great names like Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden, while other years have brought us Billy Beane and Alex Ochoa.
For every Darryl Strawberry and David Wright, this Mets franchise has drafted a Tim Leary and a Gregg Jefferies. Among the bad ones are many infamous names that may make even the most steady Mets fan cringe.
These were all players that were selected and groomed with great fan fare, yet for one reason or another just didn't meet the expectations.
Let's take a look at the worst of the most hyped prospects that never panned out.

This may be the worst list of Mets prospect busts I've ever seen...
Eddie Kunz? Lastings Milledge? Terrence Long? He got a couple of the standards right- Steve Chilcott and even Al Shirley. But where are Tim Leary, Paul Wilson, and Bill Pulsipher? How about Shawn Abner? Great, a top 10 list of Mets prospects busts from a 20 year old kid.

He's just trying. In fact I and a couple of other MMs writers helped give him names on this one.
It's not like any of us make money doing this.
And he didn't write a post about 3 reasons the Mets should sign Manny Ramirez....
Paul Wilson and Pulshiper are on there.

Fair enough... sorry, but the Mets just aggravate me in general these days...
Kunz doesn't belong on this list, neither does Terrence Long really. I think it should be saved for the saviors that never were.

In terms of sheer promise- Wilson, Payton and Jefferies need to be the top 3. Chilcott hurts for no other reason than Reggie was drafted right after him.
I think in terms of disappointment, we saw flashes from Jefferies, Payton, and Wilson.
We saw 2 1/3 innings from Tim Leary on a cold day at Wrigley Field.
I don't know that Jason Isringhausen goes on the list because ultimately, he did have a great career as a closer.
In terms of sheer promise from hype sans results- Martinez, Leary, David West, Abner, and Eddie Williams come to mind.
We might even thrown in Gary Gentry who was actually the guy that the Mets wouldn't trade for Jim Fregosi....
