D1 Game Notes – Jake Barrett, Lance McCullers, Speed Checks

D1 Game Notes –  Jake Barrett, Lance McCullers, Speed Checks

Heading into the 2011 college off-season, Jake Barrett was a name on the rise. He had just completed a strong sophomore campaign in which he struck out nearly a batter an inning and notched seven victories for one of the nation’s best teams. Take a look at ASU’s squad this season, and you’ll find that the right-hander is notably absent from the rotation. Instead, he’s been moved to the bullpen due to what the coaching staff calls “inconsistencies.” Luckily for Barrett, he’s thrived in his new role as the team’s primary closer. He’s already racked up four saves and has 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, spanning 14 outings. He’s issued only four walks. - link

TJS-To-Be-Named Department - Gonzaga LHP Tyler Olson - 138-pitch count

Miami LHPs Bryan Radziewski, Andrew Suarez out for year with shoulder injuries

St. Thomas’ LHP Austin Fairchid went 45.0-IP without giving up a run.

Jason Churchill on Mark Appel:

I would not select him No. 1 overall, and without marked progress with the slider and fastball command, I wouldn't consider him strongly at No. 3 where the Seattle Mariners select, either.

Michael Roth has been named the 2011-12 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year

By age 16, Lance McCullers was already throwing 97 mph fastballs, all but assuring him a spot in the first round in 2012. His heater also generated some conversation about whether or not he would be the first high-school right-hander ever drafted with the first overall pick. More than two years later, McCullers is no longer being considered with the first pick, but he’s still a safe bet to go inside the top-ten. A diminutive pitcher in the mold of Trevor Bauer, McCullers features arguably the best fastball of any high-schooler not named Lucas Giolito. While Giolito’s fastball has gained velocity since his freshman season of high school, McCullers’ has stayed relatively the same, due to his size and restricted growth. link
