Mets Fall to the Braves 9-3

Mets Fall to the Braves 9-3

Mets early deficit was too much to handle.

Today the Mets (7-4) went to Atlanta (6-5) feeling confident to keep proving every one wrong, but the first inning set an omen for the rest of the game. In the first inning, the Braves scored 1 run without a hit thanks to a Jason Bay error which led to Michael Bourn scoring. This game got quite ugly in the second inning. Santana just couldn't fool the Braves hitters, Dan Uggla led off with a walk and Santana killer, Matt Diaz got a hit as well. Then, Santana couldn't put young Freddie Freeman away with an 11 pitch at bat. The Braves went on to score six runs of Santana in 1 1/3 innings. This was the shortest outing Santana ever had with the Mets. The Mets ultimately couldn't dig themselves out of a 6-0 hole.

The Mets later scored two runs off Randall Delgado in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a Josh Thole RBI single and a Mike Baxter pinch hit RBI single. Ramon Ramirez continues to disappoint after he would give up two runs in the bottom fifth inning. Ramirez was supposed to be an excellent reliever from the Pagan deal, but he hasn't look good from spring training on. Hopefully his track record will lead to bounce back outings next time out.

Daniel Murphy, David Wright, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis all had two hits a piece today, and the Mets would go on to score one run in the sixth inning. Later, in the eighth, Manny Acosta gave up a solo shot to Braves 3B Juan Francisco.  The Mets bullpen was alright today, giving up three runs in 7 2/3 innings today.

The bottom line was that this Santana's first bad outing where he certainly wasn't helped by defense. The early deficit was too much to come back from, and the Mets and R.A Dickey will look to take the series tomorrow against Jair Jurrjens at noon.
