2013 Draft-Notes – DJ Peterson, Dan Durkin, Matt Kellis, More DJ

I was curious to see what New Mexico first-baseman DJ Peterson would look like after the giant 2012 season, and the results were mixed. The pop was real — only Bryant put more balls over the left-field fence — but the bat speed wasn’t élite, and as strictly a first baseman, the bat has to be special to go on day one. Certainly a name to keep in the back of your head, but take the stats with a grain of salt. - MDI

3B: Dan Durkin, Andrew HS - As a sophomore, Dan Durkin led the Thunderbolts in hitting with a .370 batting average and 34 RBI. So internally, Andrew coach Dave DeHaan knew he had his middle-of-the-lineup hitter for the next few years. But no way DeHaan could’ve predicted the kind of year the left-handed hitting junior delivered this spring. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Durkin led the talent-rich south suburbs of Chicago in hitting with a robust .523 batting average. He finished with 43 runs scored, 3 home runs and drove in 31 runs. - PBR

Andrew Hartwell‏ - About to have surgery, so I don't think I will post much today.

Prep Baseball Report‏ - IL: Mundelein LHP Ryan Borucki, the No. 1-ranked 2012 in IL, signs with the Toronto Blue Jays. Borucki was drafted in the 15th round.

RHP Matt Kellis from CBC is set for a break out senior season, a season that he has been waiting for his entire high school career. Following a successful summer season, Kellis will be part of a CBC pitching staff that looks to be one of the strongest in the state next season and help put him on the radar of many colleges in the Midwest - PBR

Jim Callis‏ - Q  -  I haven't heard anything on Richie Shaffer and the Rays! Is he signing or going back to school?  -  A  -  He'll sign.  (obvious now why Mets passed on him…)

Blue Jays sign 15th-rder Ryan Borucki for $426k. Illinois HS RHP throws 90-93, tweaked elbow in March

University of New Mexico third baseman DJ Peterson had quite the season in 2012. He became only the third player to ever win the Mountain West overall Triple Crown, he was named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year with teammate Mitchell Garver, and he was named a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award. Now his success is carrying over into the summer. Peterson currently leads USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team in runs (12) and RBIs (11) and is tied for the team lead in home runs with three long balls. He also ranks second on the team in total bases. themwc
