April 3rd 2014 -- Nats 8, Mets 2

Thursday afternoon the Met offense continued to sputter and Zach Wheeler couldn't protect a 1 run lead as the Nationals complete an opening series 3 game sweep of the Mets with a 8-2 win. The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Daniel Murphy and David Wright singled. Curtis Granderson got his first hit and rbi as a Met with an rbi double to right to make it 1-0 scoring Murphy. Juan Legares then hit a sac fly to score David Wright to make it 2-0. In the 2nd inning, Ryan Zimmerman took a Wheeler offering over the left field wall to make it 2-1. Wheeler initially looked sharp as he struck out six of the first nine batters to face him. In the 5th the Nats took the lead on RBI singles by Denard Span and Jayson Werth. Wheeler went 6. He allowed 7 hits, all 3 runs, all earned, he walked 2 and struck out 6. Nationals scheduled starter Jordan Zimmerman was scratched with the flu. Tanner Roark got the call and got the win. Roark went 6, he allowed 6 hits, 2 runs (all earned) he walked 3 and struck out 5 (including striking out the side in the 6th.) In the top of the seventh Washington got to Scott Rice and Jeurys Familia for a total of 4 runs on 4 hits a walk and a throwing error by Murphy. Murph had two errors in the game. In the eighth the Mets bullpen continued to struggle mightily as Carlos Torres gave up the eighth run on 2 hits and 2 walks. Torres walked in run #8. Gonzalez Germen finally pitched a 1-2-3 9th out of the bullpen…way to little way too late. Zimmerman was the hitting star for the Nats going 4 for 5 with the homer and 2 RBI. on the day. Granderson had two doubles and the rbi on the day, Juan Legares and a bloop double and the sac fly for the Mets. Legares has started the 2014 season batting .455 through 3 games. Wheeler took the loss he falls to 0-1. Roark gets the win he’s 1-0. The Mets are 0-3, Friday Night the Reds come to town for a 3 game weekend series. Jenrry Mejia makes his first start of the year for the Mets. Righty Mike Leake goes for Cincinnati.

Hope for something encouraging from the minors

That photo perfectly sums up Murphy defensively as a 2B. The Mets should've knocked Roark out by the 3rd. Their lack of patience at the plate is trying mine.

Cant agree more. Watching these guys swinging at everything and hear the coaches and front office speaking about balls and obp makes me sick

Michi-Exactly! Look how the Nats took Wheeler deep into counts, making him throw more and tiring him out by the 5th. Most of the Mets meanwhile go up to the plate hacking away like overeager 10 year olds.

Rather then break up a good thing they have going with this first base musical chairs, maybe they should put Flores there Friday, murph on Saturday, and maybe Andrew Brown on Sunday.

Bottom line after watching the opening series: Nats are better almost everywhere than the Mets.
OF: Harper - Span - Werth: only Lagares has the chance to be a better player than Span
1B: LaRoche vs Mets mess: no contest
SS: Desmond easily over Tejada (and Drew if he had been signed
3B: I'll take Wright over Zimmerman but not by much
2B: Maybe you can make the case for Murph
C: I'd take d'Arnaud at this point
SP: Strassburg - Gio - Zimmerman: all better than anyone the Mets can put out there now
GM: Rizzo over Alderson
Owner: not even close

81 wins would be a major accomplishment
