Friday, April 11, 2014 Game #8 Road Game #2
Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Manchester, NH 6:35 PM

LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets backed Darin Gorski’s ten strikeout performance with a dozen hits, including two home runs, in a 9-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Gorski set a Double-A career high in strikeouts while tossing six innings to earn his first win of the season. Dustin Lawley ripped a two-run homer to put Binghamton the board in the second and Brian Burgamy banged a three-run bomb off the base of the video board in right-center field in the fifth. Jon Velasquez and Adam Kolarek combined for three innings of shutout relief.

BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Rainy Lara makes his second start of the season. The right-hander earned the win in his Double-A debut, scattering eight hits over 5.1 innings to beat the Akron RubberDucks in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday. The Dominican Republic native split last season between Savannah (Low-A) and St. Lucie (High-A) going 8-7 with a 2.85 ERA between both levels.

NEW HAMPSHIRE STARTER: RHP Scott Copeland makes his second start at Double-A. The Texan was roughed up in his Fisher Cats debut, getting tagged for eight runs (six earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Trenton Thunder on Sunday. Originally selected in the 21st round of the 2010 draft by the Baltimore Orioles, Copeland signed with the Blue Jays as a Minor League free agent in July 2012. He went 9-8 with a 3.74 ERA in 23 starts with the Dunedin Blue Jays (High-A) last year.

ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING: The Binghamton Mets have collected ten hits or more in each of their games during their current four-game winning streak. They are hitting .308 (44-for-143) as a team during the streak. Their hit total includes 14 doubles, 1 triple and three home runs.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: Thursday night marked the fourth time in the last six games the B-Mets have collected four doubles. Binghamton has 19 doubles this season, second only to the Bowie Baysox (21).

GOOD START: The B-Mets’ five victories in their first seven games is their best start to a season since they went 7-1 to open the 2006 campaign. That year’s edition of the B-Mets finished the season 70-70.

STREAKING: B-Mets outfielder Darrell Ceciliani extended his season-opening hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-4 performance on Thursday night. He is 8-for-20 to start the year with three doubles, a triple and four RBI. He has collected two hits in each of his last three games. Ceciliani compiled a 17-game hitting streak last season (7/4-7/24), the third-longest in the Eastern League in 2013.

FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Dustin Lawley and Brian Burgamy both went deep for the first time as B-Mets on Thursday night. In 2013, Lawley led the Florida State League with 25 home runs, while Burgamy went deep a combined 32 times with four different teams.

BULLISH BULLPEN: After allowing nine runs in their first four games, the B-Mets bullpen has surrendered just one run in their last 12.0 innings on the mound, lowering their ERA to 3.46.

STRIKING FIRST: The B-Mets have scored first in five of their first seven games this season. They are 4-1 when cracking the scoreboard first. They are 4-0 when out-hitting opponents.

FOUR-GAME STRETCH: The 44 hits the B-Mets have collected during their four-game winning streak are the most hits in a four-game stretch since they racked up 46 from July 19 to July 22 last year. Binghamton went 2-2 during that stretch.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game set against the Double-A Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill gets the nod against RHP Casey Lawrence.

Rainy weather for Rainy Lara tonight?

Puns aside, who do you like better, Mac? Taijeron or Lawley? They're both the same age, but Taijeron put up slightly better #'s in a higher league (AA) than Lawle did in hi-A. Actually, aside from his high K's, Taieron this year and last in just 435 at bats has a stunning 41 doubles to go with a fine 23 HRs, well over half his hits. Oddly, Travis actually hit significantly better vs. righties in 2013 than lefties (unlike, say, Duda and Davis, both of whom are very weak career-wise against lefties as lefty hitters).

So projecting a likely improvement vs. lefties would make Travis a very dangerous power bat.

I feel bad for Taijeron that he is currently blocked from AAA by Messrs. Dekker, Kirk, Campbell, Abreu, and Puello. If this were last year, he clearly would have been a AAA starting OF.

What about forgotten man Darin Gorski as a lefty reliever? For whatever reason they don't feel his finesse style of pitching will translate as a starter in the big leagues, but in 2 of the last 3 years he posted very gaudy numbers and then was taken off the 40 man roster.

Thomas -

I'm going to answer this with my opinion in the Monday morning report

That's funny Reese... I just wrote that for tomorrow's morning report.

What's up with the outfields in mets minors system?
I support everyone going for their dreams, but I'm still confused as to why den dekker and kirk are still in the organization. They had their chances, they didn't make 25 man. And there are others getting clogged up in AA....... (not even gonna go there with the bobby abreu signing foolishness)

Dekker and kirk are like davis and duda...pick one and move on. I pick dekker...he seems more able to fix his game and take it to a higher level. Granderson including most of spring training is 9 for his last 76 with 27 Ks. Scary, and I hope it improves drastically, but what if he goes 7 for 50 the next 2 weeks? I'd rather then see Dekker out there frankly.
