Mets Minor League Report: April 9, 2014

MMLR Player of the Day: Sand Gnats RHRP Akeel Morris

Las Vegas (5-1) trails Sacramento (2-4) 5-3 after 8 innings.

As we pass the 1 o'clock hour on the east coast (10:00 PM PDT) the 51’s are fighting from behind. Hate to see Thor struggle like this, although we shouldn‘t be too surprised in the hitter‘s paradise known as the PCL. So, where are the Las Vegas hitters tonight? Seemingly hibernating.

A difficult outing for Noah Syndergaard: 5.0 IP, 4 R 3 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K.
Ryan Reid: R, H, 2 BB, K in his 1.0 inning.
Joel Carreno pitched a perfect 2.0 innings: 2 K

Eric Campbell: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R
Bobby Abreu: 1-3, BB, R.
Cesar Puello: 2-4, R.

Binghamton (4-2) belts Erie (2-3) 7-2

A very nice start for Matthew Bowman: (W, 1-0) 5.0 IP, R, 3 H, BB, 4 K.
John Church followed Bowman with 2 scoreless: 2 H, K.
T.J. Chism : 1.0 IP, R, H, 2 BB.
Jack Leathersich finally gets an out without striking out the batter. (pop up) In his 3.1 IP thus far this season, he has 9 K. (24.32 K/9) OK, 3.1 innings is not nearly enough to base anything, but this kid sure knows how to strike ‘em out, doesn‘t he? Tonight: 1.0 IP, 0 R, o H, BB, 2 K.

Kevin Plawecki, picking up where he left off last year: 2-5, R. (.313)
Darrell Ceciliani, looking good in the early going: 2-5, RBI. (.375)

Jayce Boyd: 1-5, 2B, RBI, R.
Cory Vaughn: 1-3, BB, R.
Travis Taijeron: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, RBI, R.

St. Lucie (2-4) tops Jupiter (2-4) 5-2

Matthew Koch, (W, 1-0 ) had a strong start, almost identical to Luis Cessa‘s last night: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 8 H, 0 BB, K. The difference - Koch got the win.
Randy Fontanez: 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, 3 K.
Beck Wheeler (S, 2) 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, K.

Dilson Herrera, leading off and playing SS: 2-5, RBI, R. (That's right - shortstop)
Brandon Nimmo: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 R.
Jairo Perez: 2-4, RBI, R.
Cam Maron: 1-4, 2B, RBI.

Augusta (3-4) tramples Savannah (3-3) 8-3.

Starter, Kevin McGowan, (2.1 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 K) and reliever, John Mincone, (2.2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K) combined to allow 8 runs in the 3rd inning. That was enough to beat our Gnats
Akeel Morris proceeded to pitch 3.0 hitless innings: BB, 9 K. After walking the first batter he faced, Morris got 10 consecutive outs, 9 by strikeout and one fly out. Morris struck out 4 in the 8th inning, one of whom reached base on a wild pitch on the 3rd strike.
Robert Coles pitched the 9th: 2 H, 2 K.

Gavin Cecchini: 1-4, RBI, R.
Jared King: 2-3, BB.
Dominick Smith: 2-4.

keep an eye on Morris...

relatively small guy that keeps the ball down with blazing speed... also pounds the zone

should be first out the door to Lucy

Morris looks to be special indeed. Koch won but his pattern of high # of hits, no walks, and not a lot of Ks continues. Matt's proven he never walks anybody...now it is time to lower the hits and up the Ks, even if he walks a few more. I think last year he gave up 100 hits in 82 innings with just 4 walks, a unique set of stats

interestin things a happinin regarding shortstop position throughout organization.
Wilmer Flores playing there every day in vegaz
Matt Reynolds is there for bmets, while Tovar (hitting over .350) is at 2b
Dilson now a game at SS, and leading off
Cecchini at Savannah ss, and also leading off.........
Are dilson and/or cecchini leadoff type guys?

Thomas-

A guy like Koch, who doesn't deal in deception but relies on location is bound to give up some hits. For the most part, he keeps it in the park. So even with him giving up a few more hits than we'd like, his WHIP (1.29) is fine. And if a guy has a K/BB ratio of 88/11 (7.97) I wouldn't worry about upping his K's. A rate of 7.09 K/9 IP is good enough for me.

Ernest-

Cecchini doesn't really profile as a leadoff hitter. He needs a breakout season to show what he can do. Thus far he has not shown much. Herrera, on the other hand, could develop into a leadoff guy. He has a reasonably high OBP and shows some speed. Needs to cut down on his strikeouts, though.
