Binghamton 4 - Portland 2



Steven Matz tossed seven strong innings and the Binghamton Mets backed him with an eleven-hit attack in a 4-2 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on Wednesday night. Binghamton snapped their seven-game losing streak at Hadlock Field while avoiding a three-game sweep. The B-Mets moved to within 4.5 games of first place in the completion of their season series with Portland.
Portland got on the board in the second inning against Matz. Sean Coyle hit a 0-1 pitch over the left-center field wall to lead off the frame and give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
It didn’t take the B-Mets long to respond against Binghamton University product Mike Augliera. Rylan Sandoval started the top of the next frame with a home run to center field that tied the game at one. It was Sandoval’s first long ball of the year.
Binghamton took their first lead in the fourth. T.J. Rivera started the rally with a double and moved to third base on a ground out from Darrell Ceciliani. Jayce Boyd brought the runner home with a single up the middle to make the score 2-1.
That advantage grew in the fifth. Dilson Herrera laced a single down the left-field line with one out and stole second base. Brian Burgamy tallied his third hit of the game with a single to put runners on the corners fro Travis Taijeron. The slugger belted a double to the gap in left-center field to score Herrera. Rivera then skied a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Burgamy for the 4-1 lead.
Portland cut into the deficit in the sixth. Ryan Lavarnway, with the Sea Dogs on Major League rehab, singled and moved to second on a ground out to start the inning. He moved to third after Michael Almanzar singled. Dave Chester came through with a single of his own, Lavarnway crossed the plateon the play to cut the B-Met lead to 4-2.
Matz (4-1) improves to 2-0 against Portland this season. Augliera (4-8) tossed six frames and allowed four runs on eight hits. He finished the night with seven strikeouts. Randy Fontanez and Cody Satterwhite pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to end the game. Satterwhite picked up his ninth save of the year.
