Binghamton Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera launched a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning and Cody Satterwhite left the bases loaded in the ninth in a 5-4 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Despite a season-high five errors, the B-Mets escaped on top in a game that saw five lead changes.
The SeaWolves jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning against Hansel Robles.
Marcus Lemon hammered a 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall, depositing his second long ball of the season off the roof of a building across the street from the park. Robles followed the blast by loading the bases, but avoided further damage by inducing Corey Jones to bounce into an inning-ending double play.
Binghamton struck back against Warwick Saupold in the third. Kyle Johnson started the push by bouncing a ground-rule double over the center-field wall. He moved to third on Brandon Nimmo’s infield single and scored when Dilson Herrera beat out a potential double play. Dustin Lawley capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle, giving the B-Mets a 2-1 lead.
Erie answered back in the third to tie the game. Lemon struck again, doubling off the fence in right-center with one out. Robles nearly escaped unharmed, but surrendered a two-out RBI single to Devon Travis.
The SeaWolves grabbed their second lead in the fourth. Jones reached safely when Xorge Carrillo failed to grab his pop up in front of the plate. He took third on a single by Dean Green and came home on Francisco Martinez’s two-out single to right.
Binghamton erased the advantage with a run in the sixth when Jayce Boyd used a fielder’s choice to plate Lawley, tying the game at three.
Erie grabbed yet another lead without a hit in the sixth. Jones reached to start the inning on a walk from reliever Ryan Fraser. He circled the bases to give Erie the lead thanks to three errors by third baseman Lawley in a span of two batters. Fraser escaped the inning without further harm by coaxing a double play out of Johnson.
Trailing for the third time in the game, Binghamton grabbed the lead in the seventh against reliever Guido Knudson. Following a one-out single by Nimmo, Herrera lifted a 1-2 pitch into right field, barely clearing the fence for a go-ahead two-run homer.
Randy Fontanez preserved the lead with two scoreless innings. The righty stranded two in the seventh and tossed a perfect eighth before handing off to former SeaWolf Cody Satterwhite in the ninth.
Satterwhite quickly registered two outs before falling into a jam. He walked Daniel Fields on four pitches, surrendered a single to Travis and walked Cabrera to load the bases. With the tying run on third, Jones sent a bouncer up the middle. Shortstop TJ Rivera dove to his left and smothered the grounder. While rolling onto the outfield grass, he flipped to Herrera at second in time for the force out, sealing Binghamton’s 13th one-run victory.
Fraser (2-1) allowed one unearned run without surrendering a hit in his lone inning of relief to pick up the win. Knudson (0-4) gave up two runs on three hits over three innings in his third blown save of the year. Satterwhite notched his seventh save of the season. Robles gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over five innings in the no-decision.
POSTGAME NOTES: It was the most errors committed by the B-Mets since a five-error game against the Akron Aeros on May 15, 2013…Dustin Lawley matched a franchise record with four errors, last done by Ty Wiggington @ New Hampshire Fisher Cats, June 24, 2000…Satterwhite has successfully converted each of his last six save chances
