LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets scored nine runs in the last two innings and completed a sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs with a 13-3 win on Thursdayafternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Travis Taijeron went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Xorge Carrillo and Darrell Ceciliani each tallied two hits and two RBI. Steve Matz retired the first twelve batters he faced and gave up three runs in 5.1 innings for the win. Three Binghamton relievers tossed a shutout over the final 3.2 innings. Portland committed three errors in the game.

BINGHAMTON STARTERRHP Rainy Lara makes his 13th start of the season and third against Erie. The Bani, Domincan Republic native’s last outing was also against the SeaWolves. He didn’t factor in the decision in 5.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits on Sunday, July 6. Erie went on to win the game 10-9 in ten innings. In three starts against the SeaWolves, Lara has allowed 11 earned runs on 19 hits in a total of nine innings. Since spending nearly a month on the disabled list, Lara is 1-0 with and has given up ten earned runs in 15 innings. Lara was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on October 31, 2009.

ERIE STARTERLHP Kyle Ryan takes the mound for the 18th time this season and his third against Binghamton. The south paw’s last start was also against the B-Mets. He allowed eight runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings, in a game the SeaWolves won10-9 on Sunday July 6. The runs and hits were both season highs. In two other outings against Binghamton this season, Ryan is 0-1 and has allowed 12 runs in 10.2 innings with eight strikeouts. He was taken by Detroit in the 12th round of the 2010 draft out of Auburndale High School in Florida.

WE HAVE A RACE: Thanks to a four-game sweep of Portland, Binghamton is just four games out of first place, the closest it has been since May 20. The B-Mets outscored the Sea Dogs, 31-8 during the series. The ten run victory on Thursday was the largest margin of the season for Binghamton.

TAIJERON ON A TEAR: Binghamton OF Travis Taijeron went 6-for-12 with a double, 3 home runsfive runs and nine RBI in the series. Taijeron is hitting .393 (11-for-28) over the last seven games with 11 RBI. He’s in a three-way tie for second in the league in doubles with 24, four off the leader.

JACKED UP:  Binghamton reliever Jack Leathersich tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out three in Thursday. The lefty hasn’t allowed a run in five outings (6.1 IP). Leathersich has 17 walks and 67 strikeouts in 37.2 innings.

IT’S BEEN ONE WEEK: Last weekend’s series between Binghamton and Erie started with a 16 inning marathon game that lasted 5 hours and 26 minutes. It was part of a series in which the teams played 40 frames in four games over the course of three days.

ATOP THE LEADERBOARD: Binghamton leads the league in four major categories. The team has the most home runs (84), while the pitching staff has  the lowest WHIP and has struck out 727 this season, the most in the league. The team has also committed the fewest errors (61).

FANTASTIC FOUR:  Binghamton is sending four All-Stars to Altoona next week. Brian Burgamy, Jon Velasquez, Cody Satterwhite and Kyle Johnsonwere all named to the team. Johnson leads the team with 49 runs. Burgamy has hit 15 home runs and leads Binghamton with 53 RBI. Velasquez has the lowest baserunners/9 IP ratio in the league. Satterwhite is 6-for-7 in save conversions this year.
