Brian Burgamy launched a tie-breaking two-run homer in the seventh inning to push the Binghamton Mets past the Reading Fightin Phils, 8-7, on Fridaynight at First Energy Stadium. After the B-Mets blew a five-run lead, the former Reading Phillie, launched his team-leading 23rd long ball of the season giving the B-Mets the lead for good in a game that saw 18 combined hits, including six home runs. The B-Mets cut their magic number to clinch a playoff spot down to six with the victory.
Binghamton wasted little time jumping on Reading starter Ryan O’Sullivan. Dilson Herrera opened a monster first inning by launching a 3-2 pitch into the picnic area beyond the left-field wall for his eighth homer as a B-Met. Following back-to-back walks, Darrell Ceciliani flared an RBI single to center. Juan Centeno chased O’Sullivan from the game by lining an RBI single into left. Wilfredo Tovar greeted reliever Austin Wright with a run-producing single to left.
The B-Mets added to their lead with another long ball in the second. Brandon Nimmo led off the frame by yanking a 1-1 pitch down the right-field line, depositing his sixth homer as a B-Met in to the pool area adjacent to the fence.
The Fightins started their rebuttal in the bottom of the second. Jake Fox started the frame by blasting Rainy Lara’s first pitch beyond the left-field wall for his team-leading 19th home run of the season.
After the B-Mets extended their lead to five on a run-producing infield single by Lara in the top of the third, Reading’s offense came alive in the bottom of the inning. With two aboard, Fox pulled a double down the left-field line, plating Zach Collier and Kelly Dugan. Fox came around one batter later when Tovar skipped a throw past first baseman Boyd on a difficult grounder from Aaron Altherr.
Reading tied the game without the aid of a hit in the fifth inning. Hansel Robles, who had entered to notch the final out of the fourth, started the frame with a pair of walks. After a fly out pushed Fox to third, Moore delivered a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at six.
Burgamy pushed the B-Mets back on top in the seventh. After Herrera walked against reliever Colton Murray to open the inning, Burgamy crushed a 2-0 pitch deep over the right-field wall. His second homer in as many games, gave Binghamton an 8-6 lead.
Kelly Dugan cut the lead in half with one swing in the seventh. The Fightins’ right-fielder sent Chase Huchingson’s first pitch of the inning over the right-field wall. Huchingson recovered to retire the next three batters and Randy Fontanez followed with a perfect eighth.
Cody Satterwhite started the ninth inning by surrendering a single to Carlos Alonso, but bounced back with two strikeouts. After two wild pitches, including one during an intentional walk, Satterwhite faced Aaron Altherr with runners at the corners. The righty fanned the outfielder, notching his 14th save of the season.
Huchingson (3-1) allowed one run over two innings of relief in the victory. Murray (1-5) surrendered Burgamy’s blast in the losing effort. Lara allowed five runs (four earned) over 3-2/3 innings in the no-decision.
