Mets Minor League Report: August 12, 2014.

Mets Minor League Players of the Day: The Closers - Gonzalez Germen, (Las Vegas) Dario Alvarez and Paul Sewald, (St. Lucie) Akeel Morris, (Savannah) David Roseboom, (Kingsport) & Alex Palsha. (GCL Mets)
We talk about the Mets depth in starting pitching, and rightfully so, but the Mets have put together a very impressive group of relievers as well. And several of them were on display tonight. Check them out. With potential closers Bobby Parnell, Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia and Vic Black (and possibly even Josh Edgin) already in the majors, and several of those who are currently starting in the minors, but who will eventually be moved to the pen, the future looks very bright indeed for the Mets bull pen.

Las Vegas (70- 55) tops Iowa (66-59) 6-5.
Noah Syndergaard: 6.1 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K.
Miguel Socolovich: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, K.
Chase Bradford: (BS, 1) (W, 3-1) 1.0 IP, 2 R, 4 H, (HR) 0 BB, K.
Gonzalez Germen: (S, 5) 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, BB, 2 K. (Germen is sporting a 0.59 ERA since being sent to Vegas.)

Josh Satin: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI.
Kevin Plawecki: 2-5, R.
Cory Vaughn: 2-5, HR, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R..

Erie (58-63) @ Binghamton (72-48) postponed - rain.

Make Up Game: St. Lucie (65-52) sinks Fort Myers (70-50) 8-6.
Cory Mazzoni: 4.0 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 K.
Jake Kuebler: 3.1 IP, 3 R, 6 H, BB, 3 K.
Dario Alvarez: (W, 1-0) 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K. (Picking up right where he left off, Alvarez has not allowed a run, only 1 hit, in 3 games since his promotion to AA St. Lucie.)

L.J. Mazzilli: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 R.
Cole Frenzel, replacing Aderlin Rodriguez at 1B in the 5th inning: 2-3, 2 2B, RBI, R.
Gavin Cecchini: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 R.
Maikis De La Cruz: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI.
Eudy Pina: 2-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R. (Pina also threw out a runner at the plate.)

Regular Game: St. Lucie (66-52) nips Fort Myers (70-51) 6-5.
Seth Lugo (W, 7-1) got roughed up, but still earned his 7th victory: 5.0 IP, 5 R, 8 H, (HR) BB, 5 K.
Paul Sewald (S, 8) continues to excel: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K. (His ERA is now 1.74.)

Jeff McNeil, leading off: 2-3, 2B, BB, 3 R.
L.J. Mazzilli: 3-4, 2 RBI, R.
Gavin Cecchini: 1-3, HR, BB, 4 RBI, R.

Asheville ( 77-44) topples Savannah (76-42) 3-2.
Robert Whalen (L 7-1) was unusually hittable tonight: 7.1 IP, 3 R, 8 H, BB, 6 K.
Another (fantastic) day at the office for Akeel Morris: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K. (ERA 0.69)

No offense. Two hits was all they got, a single by Dom Smith and a double by Colton Plaia. The Sand Gnats hitters worked Tourists pitchers for 11 walks, but that wasn’t enough to work out a win.

Lowell (27-29) @ Brooklyn (30-27) postponed - rain.

Kingsport (26-26) holds off Johnson City ( 26-24) 8-7.
Mets score 7 unanswered runs to overcome a 5-1 Cardinal 1st inning lead, and then survive a 2 run scare in the bottom of the 9th to hold on for the win.

Yoryi Nuez: 4.0 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K.
Bryce Beeler: (W, 3-1) 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB. (Nice, Bryce!)

Jean Rodriguez: 2-4, 2B, BB, R.
Wuilmer Becerra: 1-4, HR, RBI, R.
Ivan Wilson: 1-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB.

GCL Mets (23-21) tame GCL Nationals (24-21) 4-1.
Brent McMinn: 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, 2 BB.
Gabriel Feliz: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, K.
Erik Manoah: (W, 2-0) 3.2 IP, R, 5 H, 2 BB, K.
Flabio Ortega: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, K.
Alex Palsha: (S, 9) 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, K. (This 27th round draft pick is quietly making a name for himself in his 1st pro season. He has converted 9 of 9 saves, with an ERA of 0.84.)

Raphael Ramirez: 3-4, 2B, RBI, R, 2 SB.
Dash Winningham: 1-3, 2B, BB, 3 RBI.

DSL Yankees (37-24) flip DSL Mets1 (32-29) 8-6.

nice to see Cecchini coming on as of late, I am not as down on him as others. He is still only 20 years old and adapting to new league at a faster pace than Nimmo at AA. It is also nice to see German locking down since going to Vegas, he struggled after DL, but he has a nice FB/Change combo that plays in the pen. Dario Alvarez looks like he is joining Akeel Morris as part of future pen pieces. With offense down so much and very little available, I think a stocked staff is one potential answer to that problem and the Mets are positioned to have it beginning next year and restocking going forward

Akeel should me moved up already!!!

"Mets Minor League Players of the Day: The Closers"

There's only one do me, but thank you Herb! ;-)

All kidding aside, I mentioned this the other day, but it's nice to see the arms we have in both the starting rotation and the bullpen. A few guys that are still in the rotation that will eventually need to move to the pen, ie Tapia is one that comes to mind, amongst others Mazzoni, Fulmer could be guys that transition into late inning relievers if they don't take off as a starter and/or limited SP spots at the ML level.

"Robert Whalen (L 7-1) was unusually hittable tonight: 7.1 IP, 3 R, 8 H, BB, 6 K. "

That's good enough to win a game and a tough loss for Whalen. 8 hits in 7 1/3 isn't too bad,but still a respectable outing. I'd rather him lose games like this then get smacked around.

"Akeel should me moved up already!!!"

Well when Coles was promoted to St. Lucie, Morris was promoted, to the Closer role, which he's flourished in.

My guess is because since he's Rule V eligible this offseason, they want to keep him hidden at Savannah until next season and then start him as the St. Lucie closer and move up to the AA bullpen mid season with a possible AAA look if all goes well.

A lot of teams are a little weary of picking up a guy in Savannah and keeping him on their ML roster all season. If Morris was pitching in St. Lucie and dominating like he is, he might be a little more attractive to a potential GM, especially if he was in AA.

Luis - You are right. Lupo deserved a mention. I always intend to give a shout out to anyone who homers, but I just overlooked Vicente.

Anonymous - I am not generally a Germen fan, but he does seem to be responding well to being sent to Vegas. I don't think he has the stuff to be effective in the Bigs. Perhaps he will pull it together and be an asset in the future. Stranger things have happened.

Closer - Your "clones" are doing a bang up job. Good work.

Regarding Whalen, what you say is true. With decent run support, Rob would have been a winner. Nonetheless, he has averaged way less than a hit an inning both last year and this, so 8 hits in 7.1 innings is high for him. If he was his usual self, the 2 runs the Sand Gnats scored would have been enough.

Where do you guys see the Cyclone lefty closer Shane Bay going?

Mike - I honestly don't have Bay projected anywhere yet. I know Thomas does... hopefully, he will chime in
