5/8/15

Minor League Recap - 5-7-15

14 straight wins, led by Thor, the god of Thunder, for Vegas.

Minor League Player of The Night - Noah Syndergaard, with 8 great innings,a 430 foot double, a 400+ foot 2 run homer, and a lined single.  You know, Babe Ruth.

Honorable Mention - josh Rodgriguez, with a 2 run homer and 2 run double for most of Binghamton's offense in a close win.Eudor Garcia onxa 2 game tear.

AAA - Las Vegas - (20-8) 8- Albuquerque 11-17) 2

    RHSP Noah Syndergaard -  8.0-IP, 5-H, 2-R, 8-K, 0-BB, 1.82, 3-4, 2-R, HR, 2-RBI, .455

Mack - an amazing stat line... this is Thor's 3rd excellent outing in a row... he has now given up only 2 runs over his last 22 innings pitched.

    RHRP Jack Leathersich -  1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 2-K, 0-BB, 2.00

Mack - 'Leather' is also settling in... this is his 4th 'run-less outing... in fact, he only gave up runs (2) in one of his last 10 outings.

    RF Travis Taijeron -  2-4, 1-R, double, 1-RBI, 1-K, .370

Mack - I guess we also need to keep our eye on Taijerson, who seems to be lined up as the next in line to be promoted to a Mets utility outfield position.

One thing about Taijeron - He's always been known for his power... The Baseball Cube gives him a power rating of 98... but he's never produced more than he's doing right now. Taijeron's slugging percentage this season is .623, the highest it has ever been since his senior year in college at Cal Poly Pomona.

This would be such an easy decision if this guy batted from the left side of the plate, but he doesn't. The Mets are paying John Mayberry Jr. $1.45mil to be the right hand hitting utility outfielder and Junior is only hitting .136 (3-22) and they have been known for eating contracts if thigs aren't working out (Chris Young).

I think there is a good chance we could see this guy before the All-Star break if 1) Mayberry doesn't break out of his slump, 2) Taijeron keeps red hot, and 3) the Mets lead in the NL-East continues to go away.

AA - Binghamton (16-11) 5  - Portland (11-16) 4

    RHSP Gabriel Ynoa -  6.2-IP, 12-H, 4-R, 4-K, 0-BB, 4.30

    RHRP Paul Sewald -  1.2-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 0-K, 1-BB, 0.00

    1B Josh Rodriguez -  2-4, 1-R, 1-double, 1-HR (6), 4-RBI, .333

J Rod rocks.

A+ - Charlotte (18-10) 3  - St. Lucie (13-15) 2

    RHSP Logan Taylor -  6.0-IP, 4-H, 3-R, 5-K, 2-BB, 6.46

    RHRP Mike Hepple -  2.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 1-K, 0-BB, 1.72

    SS Amed Rosario  -  2-3, 1-R, triple, 1-RBI, .262

Better start for Taylor.  Conforto and Smith both 0-4.
A - Savannah (10-16) 7 - Greenville (15-12) 5

    LHSP Brad Wieck -  5.0-IP, 4-H, 1-R, 9-K, 2-BB, 4.13

    3B Eudor Garcia -   4-5, 1-R, 2-doubles, 1-RBI, .700

    LF Stefan Sabol -    2-4, 1-R, 2-BB, .276

Eudor 7 for 10 since promo.

Let me add a vote for Brad Wieck for Honorable Mention, with a fine 5 inning outing, in which Wieck allowed a single run and struck out 9, more reminiscent of his outstanding short season as a Cyclones reliever in 2014. Great to see a dominant performance out of Brad.

Dom Smith has slid to .143. What is going on for him ?

Mack, you also know I've always been a Leathersich fan. His strikeout #s just scream "in your face" and I love bold players who can back it up, and if they are guys who overcome adversity, so much the better. His first 2 outings in spring training were bad - looked like "same old Wildman Jack". Then his last several outings in the spring were both scoreless, and walk-less, and he has dominated AAA, which dominated him in the past.

It appears that all that is keeping Jack out of the majors now is a roster opening.

Syndergaard, Matz, Reynolds, Taijeron, Leathersich - Vegas hasn't won 14 in a row by accident.

Tom - The Mets look like they are content with their current pen and Leathersich probably will have to wait his turn behind Black and Parnell.
