7/1/15

July 1st 2015 -- Cubs 2, Mets 0 (11 innings)

Wednesday night at Citi Field the Cubs scored a pair of runs in with 2 out in the top of the 11th inning as the Mets get blanked for the 2nd straight night, this time 2-0 to the Cubs. The Mets have now gone 20 innings without scoring a run.  The game was a scoreless tie until the top of the 11th.  With first and third Starling Castro drove in the game’s first run on an infield hit to make it 1-0. Then with the bases loaded against Sean Gilmartin, Miguel Montero singled to right scoring Chris Coghlan to make it 2-0. On the mound for the Mets Bartolo Colon was brilliant and as with most other Met starters recently his efforts go unrewarded. Colon went 7 allowing just 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8.  Bobby Parnell, Jeurys Familia and Hansel Robles all pitched scoreless relief. Carlos Torres yielded the 1st run in the 11th and took the loss he’s now 2-4. Jon Lester started for the Cubs and pitched 7 scoreless striking out 7. Jason Mott got the win he’s now 6-1. Justin Grimm notched his 1st ML save. The Met offense is totally inert.  They managed just 7 hits on the night. Daniel Murphy led the way with a pair of hits. The Mets are shut out for the 9th time this year. With the loss the Mets fall to 40-39 overall and are now 29-13 at Citi Field.  The Nats are currently losing to the Braves. Best case scenario the Mets stay 3 ½ games out of first in the NL east barring a comeback by the Nats. Thursday Afternoon at 1:10 pm it’s the finale of this three game set.  Jacob deGrom (8-5 2.15) goes for the Mets, Jake Arrieta (7-5 2.94) goes for Chicago.

No mention of Ruben Tejada's brain fart that nearly resulted in a double play. In Little League you're taught what to do in a rundown and when a suicide squeeze fails. The umps blew the call, thus saving Tejada from joining Daniel Murphy in the pantheon of ballplayers who seem to forget the most fundamental aspects of the game when they're on the base paths.

Sigh. Reese, you need a sabbatical.

There are just not words to express how putrid this offense is.

Alderson should not only be removed from the Mets, he should be run out of baseball.

As I've said to buddy Scot tonight. ...........
Its time to empty out the farm.
Package a Thor/Matz with 3/4 other top 20 prospects and go get some major league baseball players.
Otherwise, do nothing, trade Niese for an A ball prospect, pitch your best 5 until they're innings caps in September, finish the year with a respectable 79-84 wins, and hope something gives next year.
