Buffalo 4, Akron 2

Happy Birthday, Vinny Rottino.

The Bisons' newest 32-year old outfielder celebrated his special day with a big day at the plate, driving in the first three runs of a 4-2 Buffalo victory over the Red Wings, Saturday evening at Frontier Field.

In a game that saw many opportunities for both clubs, it was Rottino that came through in all the right times. His bases-loaded double in the third inning drove home a pair and gave Buffalo a 2-1 advantage. The outfielder then added some needed insurance with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Rottino rounded out his day with a single in the eighth inning. He scored the Herd's fourth run on Rob Johnson's sac fly four batters later. Rottino finished his birthday performance 2-2 with three RBI.

That was more than enough for the Bisons' bullpen who remained perfect in 2012. Justin Hampson worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning in relief of Chris Schwinden. Jack Egbert retired all five batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts in the seventh inning with Rochester threatening. Closer Fernando Cabrera worked a perfect ninth inning for his second save in as many days.

The Bisons' most valuable pitcher form a season ago, Schwinden (1-0) was sharp as well. Both runs scored on the righty were unearned. He fanned four and allowed just four hits in five innings.

Both teams had more chances to score early before the bullpens locked the game down. Zach Lutz was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the second inning. In the bottom of the frame, Schwinden threw out Red Wings' outfielder Rene Tosoni trying to score on a squeeze bunt. Both teams left eight men on base. Rochester was just 2-12 with runners in scoring position.

BISONS NOTES:Bobby Scales finished the game 3-4 with a pair of doubles and a perfect sacrifice bunt in the third inning that set up the Bisons' two-run rally...Bisons pitchers have yet to yield a home run in 2012...Buffalo is now 8-2 in their last 10 games at Frontier Field dating back to 2011.
