Rain Postpones Sand Gnats Game

Rain and poor conditions at Lake Olmstead Stadium forced Monday’s game between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets to be postponed until Tuesday. Gnats righthander Kevin McGowan and GreenJackets lefthander Christian Jones were pitching toe-to-toe, neither allowing a run to score into the fifth inning, when rain made the rest of the game unplayable.

First baseman Leonardo Rojas had just hit a one-out double off of McGowan in the bottom of the fifth inning when the umpires made the decision to postpone the game. Rojas’s double was just the second hit allowed all game for McGowan; the first hit was a single off the bat of left fielder Shawne Payne to lead off the bottom of the first inning.

Jones was even sharper for Augusta, allowing no hits while fanning seven batters through five innings pitched thus far. Jones’s lone flaw was a walk issued to Gnats designated hitterJared King in the first inning.

Tonight’s game will be resumed tomorrowTuesday, April 15, at 5:30 p.m. The originally scheduled match-up will then being shortly thereafter, pitting Gnats righthander Ricky Knapp (0-1, 11.57) against GreenJackets righthander Chase Johnson (1-1, 3.38). First pitch at Lake Olmstead Stadium is set for 5:00 p.m.
