The Binghamton Mets gave up three runs in the first inning and never recovered in a 5-1 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Kendall Graveman tossed six innings of one run ball for New Hampshire in his Double-A debut. Jayce Boyd went 2-for-4 in the loss. The B-Mets had a runner reach base in eight of nine innings.
New Hampshire started the scoring in the first inning against Steven Matz. Berti walked and stole second to lead things off. Two batters later, Andy Burns singled to score Berti for the first run of the game. With two outs, Sean Ochinko hit a home run over the left-center field wall and put the road team on top 3-0.
The score stayed that way until the fifth. Jorge Flores hit a one-out single and moved to third on a throwing error by Jayce Boyd at first base. Berti grounded out to score the runner and extend the New Hampshire advantage to 4-0.
The B-Mets finally broke through in the fifth after being shut out on six hits through the first four frames against Graveman. Back-to-back singles by Xorge Carrillo and Rylan Sandoval put two on with nobody out. Carrillo was called out at third base on a Kyle Johnson fielder’s choice. Brandon Nimmo walked to load the bases. T.J. Rivera then skied a sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought Sandoval across the plate to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Fisher Cats got that run back in the sixth. Mike McDade hit a one-out double down the third base line with one out. He moved to third on a single and scored on a base knock from Cory Aldridge to put New Hampshire on top 5-1.
Graveman (1-0) gave up a hit in each of the first five innings he pitched, but only let one run cross the plate. Matz (4-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on a career-high ten hits in 5-1/3 innings and struck out four. Ryan Fraser and Jack Leathersich shut out the Fisher Cats over the final 3-2/3 frames of the game.
POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton has lost five of their last eight games…Boyd has six hits in his last four games…Rivera extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the first….The B-Mets had eight hits, but never more than two in an inning…They went 1-for-6 with RISP. - team press release
