St. Lucie, Brevard County Split Pair

After a two hour and 32 minute delayed start, the St. Lucie Mets and Brevard County Manatees were finally able to play their doubleheader on Thursday at Tradition Field.

The teams played deep into the night with the Manatees winning the first game 6-1 and the Mets taking the second game 3-2.

In game 2, the Mets got a dominant start from Michael Fulmer. The right hander pitched six scoreless innings, striking out a season high nine batters. He scattered four singles and only walk one batter.

Manatees starter Michael Strong pitched four scoreless innings in his first start of the year, but the Mets got to reliever Martin Viramontes in the fifth. Viramontes walked Gilbert Gomez and Maikis De La Cruz to start the frame. Then he threw Eudy Pina’s sac bunt over the head of his first baseman to allow Gomez to score.

Later in the fifth Jared King beat out an infield hit with the bases loaded to plate De La Cruz and make it 2-0.

Pina’s RBI sac in the sixth scored Gavin Cecchini to put the Mets up 3-0.

Paul Sewald allowed a two-out, two-run double in the seventh to Jose Sermo which cut the lead to 3-2. Sewald recovered to get Tyrone Taylor to fly out to center to end the game with the tying run on third and go-ahead run on second.

In game 1, the Manatees knocked John Lannan for four runs on nine hits in four innings.

That was plenty of offense for starter Tyler Wagner, who went the distance. Wagner allowed just four hits. The only run he gave up was a solo homer to Eudy Pina.

Taylor put the Manatees on the board in the third with a two-run double. Brandon Macias made it 3-1 with an RBI sac fly in the fourth. Orlando Arcia singled home Alfredo Rodriguez later in the fourth.

The Manatees plated two more runs later in the game off of Seth Lugo on two-out RBI singles. - team press release
