The Binghamton Mets gave up four runs in the seventh inning en route to a 6-5 loss to the Trenton Thunder on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Dilson Herrera went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the loss, while Brandon Nimmo scored twice and knocked in two more.
Trenton tallied the game’s first run in the top of the first against Tyler Pill. Jake Cave singled to start the game and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Tyler Austin followed with a base knock to bring the runner home and give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
The B-Mets answered in the second against Zach Nuding. Travis Taijeron started the two-out rally with the single. Rylan Sandoval and Kai Gronauer worked back-to-back walks to load the bases for Nimmo. He smacked as single to bring home two runs and give Binghamton the lead. Herrera kept the inning going with a bases-clearing double to left-center field to put the B-Mets on top, 4-1.
Both pitchers handled the opposing lineup over the next few innings. The Thunder finally cut into the lead in the sixth. After Pill had retired the previous nine batters, Rob Segedin doubled to lead off the frame. He came around to score on the one-out two bagger by Tyler Austin to make the score 4-2.
Trenton did the rest of their damage in the seventh against Adam Kolarek. Ali Castillo singled with one out. After Kolarek walked the next two batters, he was taken out for Jon Velasquez. Segedin emptied the bags with a three-run double to give the Thunder the lead back. Austin capped off the inning with a base knock that plated Segedin for the 6-4 Trenton advantage.
The B-Mets cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame against Mark Montgomery. Nimmo worked a two-out walk and moved to second on a passed ball by the catcher, Peter O’Brien. Herrera laced a single to left field to bring the runner across the plate and make the score 6-5.
The B-Mets wouldn’t get any closer, though, as Diego Moreno worked a scoreless final two innings to pick up his fifth save. Nuding (5-2) went six innings and allowed four runs. Pill didn’t factor in the decision, going six frames and letting two runs come home. Kolarek (1-1) gave up three runs in 1/3 inning. Jon Velasquez allowed a run in 1-2/3 frames and was tagged with his third blown save of the season.
